Wellard’s Beaufort River Meat reaches processing milestone

Wellard is celebrating the processing of its 120,000th head since purchasing the Beaufort River Meats abattoir at Woodanilling.

Beaufort River Meats has operated continually and seamlessly since November 2012, and with robust forward orders, we expect operations to keep going at full speed until a routine maintenance period in winter, said Beaufort River Meats General Manager David Jarvie.

To support the abattoir’s ongoing operations, Wellard is purchasing sheep, lambs and goats throughout the state, providing price competition across a wide geographic area.

The recent addition of a dedicated marketing team, comprised of Blair Brice and Jim Price, has significantly expanded the reach of the meat which is exported to the Middle East, South East Asia and the United States.

The abattoir is currently processing about 2000 sheep and lambs a day, with one day a week allocated to goats. Some carcases are exported chilled via airfreight, others frozen via maritime transport and other carcases are broken down into a six-way cut.

All of the animals are processed according to Halal requirements.

“The incorporation of the halal certification into the abattoir operations had been relatively seamless while providing additional market options and opportunities for Beaufort River,” Mr Jarvie said.

“We are really pleased with the commitment of the Macri family – Joe, Laurence and Anna Macri – who continue to work closely in the business while aiding the integration into our Group. The skill and commitment of the 70 staff and contractors at Beaufort River Meats is evident in the quality of the product, the abattoir’s throughput and customer product acceptance, he said.

Wellard has also been able to use its Baldivis feedlot to grow out store lambs to weights and grades suitable for processing at Beaufort River Meats.

“This integrated model provides extra efficiencies and utilisation of Wellard assets and marketing opportunities for store sheep producers,” Mr Jarvie said.
