Hyfield Poll Merino Stud

Overview

Flock No – 717, Kojonup, WA
OJD status – ABC score 5
Brucellosis accredited – OVAC No 195

The Hyfield Poll Merino Stud is renowned for breeding commercially-focused, large framed, heavy cutting Poll Merino sheep.

Based around a stud ewe flock of 3,000 stud ewes and a commercial ewe flock of 11,000, it is one of the largest ram sellers in Western Australia and its high performance genetics are sought by Poll Merino breeders from across Australia.

Hyfield is at the forefront of performance measurement. The adoption of advanced electronic tagging, data recording systems and extensive genealogy records ensures each animal is objectively evaluated for its genetic potential to produce wool and meat.

Breeding Objectives

Hyfield seeks to breed rams and ewes which will grow as much soft, 19 micron wool as possible on a large framed animal.

High fecundity is an important selection trait as number of lambs weaned is a major profitability factor for commercial sheep breeders.

Visual selection is complemented by extensive objective data collection recording of our key profit drivers – fertility, fleece traits, wool and body weight for each sheep in the Hyfield stud.
