It is not the dollars, it is animal welfare that is paramount when you are talking about managing sheep, and in its 35 years of operation Wellard has handled more that 32 million sheep.

With such a large and longstanding involvement in Australia’s sheep industry Wellard is acutely aware that the shearer plays a crucial role in the management of sheep and their valuable fleece.

The right wool length is important for transport and spinning, the right time of shearing is important for profitability. And aesthetically, a well shorn sheep looks great in its fresh, white coat. It is the Shearer who makes this difference.

“Wellard has always paid attention to the selection of its Shearer and in their ability to carry out such an important job efficiently, proficiently and with the right focus on animal welfare. Hour after hour, run after run, sheep after sheep, they need to consistently demonstrate a good track record,” said Wellard CEO Mauro Balzarini.

“But shearing is a hard and wearing job and even the best of Shearer needs to take a rest, and when the time is right, retire to preserve his or her body. So, with regret, in the past Wellard had to say goodbye to the Shearer, and us much as it was a big and long blow, the Company has kept a firm eye on the future to ensure a young replacement of the Shearer is even better and is as skilled and committed to the best welfare outcomes…like its predecessor.

“Good shearers are the product of natural skill, attention to detail and the right training from the beginning, even if this means they’re not ringing the shed immediately.

“After combing the world for the best replacement Shearer, it has been identified in the catching pen, its just needs a bit more time before it can start contributing to the Australia’s sheep industry.”
