Wellard Rural Exports wishes to express its heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Fremantle Port and emergency services crews for their response to the fire on board the Ocean Drover.
Wellard CEO Mauro Balzarini said the incident demonstrated the capabilities and professionalism of emergency crews and systems to protect lives and infrastructure at Fremantle Port in the event of an emergency.
“Incidents such as this are never welcome, yet they are anticipated. Yesterday’s coordinated response by fire fighters, paramedics, hospital personnel and other agencies was exceptional and Wellard is grateful for their efforts,” Mr Balzarini said.
The fire was fully extinguished last night. An investigation by the appropriate authorities into the cause of the fire will begin today. Wellard will provide any assistance necessary to facilitate the investigation.
A full damage assessment will also be undertaken once it is safe to do so.
The fire and damage was contained to the crew accommodation area and bridge.
One crew member remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition and Wellard will continue to provide support to him and his family.
A second crew member has been released from hospital today.
The remaining 45 crew members are being accommodated in Fremantle.
Ocean Drover was preparing to take on board 6,000 cattle. The company is making alternative arrangements to transport the livestock.
