Animal Welfare in Action
Wellard’s cattle team have been active in client’s abattoirs in Vietnam throughout January and the beginning of February, preparing for the Vietnamese New Year.
The Lunar New Year or Tet Holiday, is the most important celebration in Vietnamese culture. The word is a shortened form of Tết Nguyên Đán, which is Sino-Vietnamese for “Feast of the First Morning of the First Day”. Tết celebrates the arrival of spring, based on the Vietnamese calendar, and as its name suggests, marks a period of feasting and a resultant spike in beef consumption.
Therefore it is the busiest time of the year for beef processing in Vietnam.
Wellard Compliance and Animal Welfare Manager Kari Moffat has been undertaking a pre-Tết ESCAS supply chain inspection, visiting feedlots and abattoirs throughout Vietnam. This picture is Kari with staff at Viet Uc abattoir, including the designated Animal Welfare Officer (red shirt).
The staff were conducting their pre-checks before the night’s processing. Each night equipment – stunners, cattle talkers and scanners – is checked to ensure it’s in good order and ready for use.
